Overview

Greenwich is an outer London borough on the south of the river, downstream from central London. It is home to an historic maritime cluster including the Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark and old Royal Naval College. Students in Greenwich have one of the worst GCSE attainment in London, with 62.3% of students in the borough achieving grades 9-4 (equivalent to A*-C under the old system) in English and Maths at GCSE compared to 68.7% across the whole of the capital.

Greenwich has seen a large fall in unemployment in recent years. In the period 2014-2017, Greenwich had an unemployment rate of 7.9%. This fell by 2 percentage points to 5.9% in 2017-2020, still above the London average of 4.9%.
